The Golden Temple, at Amritsar - so-called because it is covered in gold leaf - is the sacred centre of this dynamic faith. Sikh culture is rich in physical symbolism and historic stories. Its holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, enshrines the words of the C15th Guru Nanak, who preached tolerance, saying that 'God is neither Hindu nor Muslim'
